Day Two in Switzerland: Day Trip to Luzern (Lucerne)

On our second day in Switzerland we took a day trip to Luzern to do some sightseeing and exploring. The weather today was pure perfection. It was sunny but not too hot and it had a slight breeze that would come and go. Luzern would be beautiful even in the pouring rain but the nice weather really made our visit fantastic.

We hopped on a quick train to get to Luzern. By the end of our Swiss trip we were pros at train travel.

We visited the Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrucke, a wooden footbridge across the river Reuss in Lucerne. What makes this bridge special is that is dates back to the 17th century and is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe! It's also the world's oldest surviving truss bridge too I think. The trusses had stunning paintings (which honestly we couldn't figure out because we couldn't translate the text).

Unfortunately it suffered a fire in 1993 that destroyed many of the paintings.

We wandered to the Old City to visit a string of 9 tower ramparts.

You can climb up some of them and take in the city view from the top.

We then walked back to town to find some dinner.

You can see the ramparts and wall from this photo. It was neat to compare the views from the ground with those up on the ramparts.

After grabbing some late lunch/early dinner we walked to the Lion Monument.

The Lion Monument is a rock face that commemorates the Swiss Guards who were attacked during the French Revolution when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris in 1792.

Next time I'll share our third day in Switzerland, when we went to Liechtenstein and had a surprise stop in an unanticipated country!
